Amtrak - "A great experience you really can't have anywhere else"

Travel Expert and Radio Show Host Stephanie Abrams welcomes Jason Abrams a spokesperson for Amtrak to discuss news and updates in the Northeast USA and tips for Thanksgiving week train travel.

Jason notes that while fall-season travel may be getting a bit colder in the northeast it's mostly staying warm in the south of the country and that as the weather starts to turn Amtrak starts thinking about Thanksgiving. Both Jason and Stephanie are big fans of the Amtrak Auto Train which helps connect the southeast USA, but there are many routes to choose from for Thanksgiving travel which happens to be Amtrak's busiest weak of the year with the highest weekly number of passengers. Jason says that historical ridership data for the last decade is at least 700,000 passengers during Thanksgiving week with 2017 setting a record at 777,000 riders during Thanksgiving week, with the Sunday-after-Thanksgiving reaching 160k passengers.

Jason says Amtrak takes every precaution to insure trips go smoothly but strongly recommends that travelers book travel as well as get to the station early. Jason and Stephanie concur that early booking of tickets and also getting to the station well in advance are the best ways to insure smooth holiday travel.

With regards to Thanksgiving week travel, Jason says that both the Wednesday prior to and the Sunday after Thanksgiving Day tend to be the busiest. Stephanie notes that traveling on the holiday day, (e.g. on Thanksgiving Day) fares and availability may be better than the surrounding dates. Jason says he took a look at ridership numbers for 2017 and the least busy travel day during Thanksgiving week was indeed Thanksgiving Day.

One of the many conveniences of travel by Amtrak is passenger allowances for luggage which include no-additional-cost for up to four luggage bags and, space allowing, a bicycle at no extra cost. Also, a new Amtrak pet policy allows for cats and dogs under 20lbs to travel in cabin for an additional $25 each way.

Stephanie jokes that she aspires to travel like a flight attendant or a nun, both of whom she says travel with a very economic amount of luggage. She suggests travelers keep in mind that overhead luggage bins may be quite full during peak travel time such as around holidays and it's good to try and pack sparingly.

Jason mentions that during the holidays Amtrak has increased security to contend with the increased ridership including Amtrak PD presence on the tracks and in the stations making sure the tracks are clear and safe and urges passengers to be aware and to "see something say something" with regards to safety. He says Amtrak recently participated in an event last week talking about "Operation Lifesaver" which deals with track safety and driving safety when on, near or crossing tracks.

Jason mentions a few iconic Amtrak long-haul routes including the Coast Starlight running from Los Angeles to Seattle, the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles, California Zephyr running from Chicago to San Francisco through the Rocky Mountains, Capitol Limited from Chicago to Washington, DC as well as the Crescent from NYC to New Orleans, and the Silver Service and Palmetto down to Florida from New York City. He says that with Wi-Fi on most trains, and all the other conveniences of train travel, it's a "great experience you really can't have anywhere else".
