Travel Expert and Radio Show Host Stephanie Abrams talks with Deb Sanderson, Amtrak Marketing Manager for New York State and Vermont who is based at the Albany/Rensselaer, New York Train Station.

Stephanie remarks that she loves the Albany/Rensselaer rail station which reminds her of the type of red brick colonial era houses common in states like. In particular she adores the large palladium style windows at the station and says that it’s a "gorgeous joy" to be in station itself.

Deb says one of her key roles at Amtrak is being involved in making sure travelers know all about Amtrak services and options in the region she is responsible for which includes New York State and Vermont and service to Montreal.

Stephanie shares that one of the things she enjoys about train travel is meeting new people on the train. One of her experiences was meeting an Artist, originally from Haiti, who's painting style she describes as being reminiscent of some of the works by Henry Rousseau. The artist's name is Louis Rosemont and onboard he shared with her pictures of some of his work which Stephanie describes as including bright colors like you would find in an array of sherbet at an ice cream shop and depictions of bird wildlife, Caribbean scenes, lush greenery and colorful homes. She describes Mr. Rosemont's work as exquisite and only met him because he was sitting in front of her onboard the train.

Out of interest, Deb is a Karate enthusiast and currently is a 3rd degree black belt. Passion for the martial arts runs in her family and they participate in regular self defense classes. Her younger sister is a 2nd degree black belt and Deb jokes that she must be getting old because her sister almost broke her finger while sparring with her recently. The damage required cutting off her rings because her finger swelled so badly she could not remove them. She laments that she still can't make a full fist as a result of the injury. Her office is on the fourth floor of the train station and overlooks the lobby. As with many practitioners she is constantly, often unconsciously performing her martial art in spare moments. She jokes that when she walks down to the refrigerator on the lower level sometimes a ticket agent will ask "what are you doing". It's only then she realizes she was practicing her technique or kata.

Stephanie is a train travel enthusiast and enjoys the extra space afforded to travelers aboard. She complains that on airplanes captains often keep the seatbelt sign illuminated for almost the entire trip forcing passengers to remain seated for extended, often unhealthily, long periods of time. She comments that one of the joys of train travel, especially if traveling with children or for those with back or other muscle issues, is that passengers can get up and stretch out or walk about the train whenever they want.

Deb Sanderson lets us know that effective September 1, 2016 a new president and CEO will take the helm at Amtrak. The outgoing CEO Mr. Boardman announced he would be leaving Amtrak on December 9, 2015. According to Deb he was in the position for longer than the usual 1 to 2 years. She says not to quote her but recalls he was at the job for approximately seven or eight years. Charles "Wick" Moorman, a long time railroader who comes from the freight railroad industry and worked his way up through the ranks will take the reins of Amtrak starting Sept. 1.

Enjoy wonderful scenery as it zips by through the windows of Amtrak trains. Deb explains that the routes, especially the lines that travel alongside the Hudson River have gorgeous scenery all year round. From NY travelers can easily go to Montreal, Canada. On that route they will pass by breathtaking cliffs along Lake Champlain in NY State. Deb says that route was recently rated as one of the top 10 scenic routes in world by National Geographic. Stephanie agrees that the scenery is "like a post card."

Stephanie asks Deb how to tell which trains will have certain amenities such as dining or café cars. Deb suggests visiting the Amtrak.com website and looking at the actual train route and number to determine its amenities indicated by different icons.

Deb is happy to announce that as of press time Amtrak trains in NY State will allow pets on board. Pets are limited to small dogs or cats. Reservations are required for pets and there is a $25 price tag. Some restrictions apply such as weight of the animal. Travelers cannot go to Canada with a pet by train yet. Also the train route duration must be 7 hours or less. Pets must fit in a small carrier and fit under seat. Only five pets total are allowed per train and these spots are on a first come first serve basis. Travelers must reserve space for their pet at time of their reservation.

Stephanie asks about taking pets on longer haul rides and if station stops are sufficient for animals to relieve themselves to allow for longer journeys. Deb lets us know that travelers cannot plan on a station stop being long enough for pets to relieve themselves. For instance if a train is running late it will make up time by shortening station stops.

Station stops, or station dwell time is not guaranteed and Deb says that no one wants any "accidents" on-board. Engines and crews change in Albany, so time in-station is longer at that station. Deb says travelers might have 10-15 minutes in station there.

Deb also tells us about a special New York State Fair service line Amtrak will run August 25 through Labor Day. The Empire and Maple Leaf lines will utilize a CSF railway line to gain access to the back of the fairgrounds. Kids age 2-12 will ride free for that station stop.

Also, Fall brings out Amtrak's one of a kind Dome Car which runs service all the way to Montreal from Albany. Service starts on the Adirondack route and runs from September 29 through November 1. Amtrak only has one Dome Car so passengers need to make sure that their reservation is for the direction the dome car is traveling that day. The Dome Car undergoes maintenance on Wednesdays and runs Northwards on Thursday/Saturday/Monday. It runs southward on Friday/Sunday/Tuesday. Stephanie describes the experience of traveling aboard the Dome Car is a wonderful feast for the eyes surrounded by glass in a vintage car that weaves through the countryside and snakes a path along Lake Champlain at one point. It sounds like a trip worth taking!
