Find out about The Holiday Pops and the Boston Pops holiday seasonal performances

In this special interview Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart joins Travel Expert and radio show host Stephanie Abrams to talk about The Holiday Pops, a series of Christmas and winter season themed performances at Boston's Symphony Hall. There are 38 scheduled performances between December 3, 2014 and Christmas Eve, December 24, 2014 with extra morning and afternoon matinee performances on the weekends including matinees designed specifically for smaller children in the audience. Those performances have a slightly shorter seventy five (75) minute performance run time. They also omit an intermission and feature child-friendly meals. Keith stresses that all performances are children-friendly and that children of any age are welcome to all of the shows. For those with children who are very young the 11am performance may be a perfect fit into a young person's activity schedule.

Stephanie extends a special thank you to the South Lake Tahoe, California based radio station KOWL AM 1490 and Steve Harness its General Manager for use of the station's facilities to record this remote interview with Keith Lockhart. Keith was in his office inside Symphony Hall making time in his frantic schedule between checking up on the progress of the preparations for the upcoming season and Stephanie was in Lake Tahoe for some media coverage in that part of California.

Keith says that for many families the Holiday Pops have become part of their Christmas and holiday tradition with many families now introducing their 2nd generation of listeners. Children whose parents brought them to see The Holiday Pops are now bringing their own children. He says The Boston Pops are very much a part of the fabric of Boston and Boston's Christmas season. The romance and nostalgia associated with Christmas fits perfectly with the ambiance of Boston during the holidays. He says "It feels like Christmas with a nip in the air and the city preparing for the holidays".

Stephanie and Keith agree that Symphony Hall's setup is perfect for the Holiday Pops. Unlike a traditional music theatre which would have stadium seating in rows, the hall is instead arranged with tables and chairs on a flat hardwood floor. Stephanie comments on how good the acoustics of Symphony Hall are and that visitors can get up during the performance and move around or even dance on its wonderful dance floor. Keith says they can "Enjoy eggnog and Christmas cookies while listening to the Boston Pops". If you bring your little ones they too can get up and move around a bit during the performance and no one will mind since it's a very family friendly show and everyone understands that it' tough for children to stay still for a long performance. They can have snacks, get up and move around a bit, and just have fun.

With 38 performances to conduct in such a short period of time during The Holiday Pops season, Keith Lockhart says his arms do tend to get a bit sore, but it's very exciting and he says you don't really feel it until afterwards. He says it's worth being a little tired to be able to bring so much magic to so many visitor's holidays including all the children that come to the shows. For him "it's a wonderful scene and that the holidays are all about seeing the world through the eyes of our kids". Also, this is Keith's 20th year conducting The Holiday Pops and it's obvious that he loves to do it. When discussing the lineup of music selections during The Holiday Pops Keith Lockhart describes the shows as having "Quality and Variety and [it] touches people's heart strings from every walk of life [from] Sacred to secular, classical and just-for-fun".

After Christmas, on the 26th and 27th there will be a performance of the holiday modern classic film "Home Alone", which was in fact scored by John Williams. The projection of the film on a very large screen is accompanied by a live performance of the score by the Boston Pops. The Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops have done similar live-accompaniments to other films including "The Wizard of Oz", Disney's "Fantasia" and recently " West Side Story" which was performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Keith says "you get the impact of live music as well as the full glory of a giant screen rendition of a movie favorite" and Show Host Stephanie Abrams agrees that the level of engagement between the audience and the film is heightened by the live aspect of the music and highly recommends it to Travelers411 fans and listeners.

Keith Lockhart and Stephanie Abrams also talk about New Year's Eve at the Pops. Stephanie says she and her husband Mark have spent New Year's Eve with the Pops twice and loves it! Keith agrees that it's a great way to ring in the New Year, a great old-fashioned way to spend the night with someone you love and that Symphony Hall has a great dance floor. He notes that it's a really classy way to spend a night.

Stephanie thinks about the old 1930's - 1940's movies where all the women are wearing wonderful silk evening dresses and "all the men wake up wearing tuxedos". She thinks of actor David Niven and Keith remarks that she's describing what sounds like a very "Fred and Ginger Moment" referring of course to movies featuring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. In movies like those, the characters might go to a swanky night club where there may be 20 to 40 different musicians playing. Stephanie remarks that it seems like the Boston Pops has 60-80 or more performers on hand during New Year's Eve performances and that today, it is a truly rare opportunity to experience a big band on a dance floor scene. Keith says that the number of performing Boston Pops musicians is quite a bit higher than what you would see in the kinds of movies Stephanie describes and that while the exact number of musicians varies from year to year it is a massive number.

Keith reminds us that The Pops will be in Florida in February with performances in Estero (outside of Fort Meyers), Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, West Palm Beach and Sarasota. Tickets are available online at bostonpops.org for these and other performances including summer performances at Tanglewood.
