Explore Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way, the longest coastal route in the world, and Ireland's west coast

Travel Expert and Radio Show Host Stephanie Abrams says she is delighted to speak with Nail Gibbons, Chief Executive of Tourism Ireland who is calling into the studio from Dublin to talk about tourism in Ireland and says that they are in the middle of their Summer season and they have more visitors right now than they've ever had in their history.

Show Host Stephanie Abrams says that usually she visits Ireland 3 or 4 times a year, but this year only has two visits planned due to some personal challenges regarding her aging mother. Naill tells Stephanie that family is very important and Ireland will always be there for her and hopes that she will make it in September and December and that he'll roll out the red, or rather, the green carpet for her when he sees her.

During Saint Patrick's day, Stephanie happened to be in New York City, and while watching the parade, actually saw Niall Gibbons and Alison Metcalfe giving an interview on TV. He remembers that he did give an interview on 5th avenue in NYC during the parade. The parade itself was by Tourism Ireland.

Niall Gibbons says that the west coast of Ireland is a dream destination for many people. It ranges from Malin Head in the north down to Kinsale, which is in County Cork, in the south. He extols the regions remarkable cliffs, rugged coastline dotted with lighthouses and diverse coastal creatures such as seals, puffins, dolphins. Stephanie says that "puffins are the cutest things. When they run, waddle, and finally lift off."

Stephanie says she's "up to some mischief" in her local county in Massachusetts. She's worked out and is promoting a special rate to stay at the Spencer hotel owned by Paul Fitzpatrick who also owns the Beacon hotel. This "Friends and fans of Stephanie Abrams" rate is designed to allow fans of James Taylor, a Berkshire Massachusetts favorite to be in Dublin to listen to James Taylor when he performs there this year. Niall says he loves James Taylor and that he's sure the act will sell out.

Niall Gibbons says it's very easy to get into and out of Ireland and that there's never been more inbound and outbound flights. Nearly half of all flights coming to Ireland are serviced by Aer Lingus. Stephanie says there's a very important relationship between Jetblue and Aer Lingus helping travelers get to Ireland from all over in the United States. Very conveniently when you fly with Jetblue through to Ireland your luggage is checked straight through at your originating departure city without the need to recheck it for the international portion of your journey.

Niall is hoping to come to Boston for I-Fest later this year. He also says there will be a sales mission coming over to Boston and to Chicago plus some west coast cities to sell and promote Ireland. Boston's I-Fest will run from the 26th to the 28th of September at the Seaport World Trade Center. Stephanie actually thinks she'll be in Ireland during those dates, but she's still sorry to miss it since she says "Nobody throws a party like the Irish and no one puts on a sales mission like Tourism Ireland because you get a complete picture of everything from food and drink to music and dance presented in the most creative and delightful fashion". Niall agrees that the sales missions are terrific fun and they put on a great show for the attendees and the media.

Niall Gibbons says that Ireland may not have rich mineral deposits like many other countries, but that the true natural resource of Ireland is its culture of storytelling, music and dance, folk lore. The Irish peoples connection with poetry, music and literature is very strong with many recurring festivals centered around the arts. To name one in particular is the 10-12 day Dublin Theatre Festival in September. Niall says the number of historical and current Irish poets and playwrights is amazing as are the number who have gone on to become Nobel Prize winners for literature.

Stephanie mentions an annual Yates festival in Sligo that just happened on June 13, 2014. Niall says he's glad Stephanie mentions Yates because he is one of Ireland's most famous poets. ┬ČNext year is Yates' 150 birthday and there will be special events planned to celebrate his body of work on June 13, 2015 and throughout the year. Stephanie adds that there is an ongoing Yates exhibit at the National Library in Dublin and Niall says that will continue through 2015 with special plans for the 150th birthday celebration year.

Travel Expert and Radio Show Host Stephanie Abrams brings up Mark Leslie. His family owns Castle Leslie in County Monaghan and he resides in Dublin and his firm Martello Media was responsible for the design of the Blackrock Observatory visitor exhibit, the original Cliffs of Moher visitor's centre, the Guinness Museum exhibit in Dublin and the visitors and research centre at Glasnevin National Cemetery in Dublin, to name a few.

Stephanie remarks that Daniel O'Connell, an Irishman, and Fredrick Douglass, an American, both living in the 1800's became good friends because of the similarities between their missions of social justice for their people. That relationship is commemorated at Glasnevin Cemetery. Stephanie thought of Mark Leslie because of his involvement in designing the Yates exhibit at the National Library but his firm was also responsible for some of the work at Glasnevin. She says that because the Yates exhibit was commissioned by the Office of Public Works it's a free admission. Also, she says that the visitor experience is that "you feel like you are Yates' best friend. It is such an intimate experience learning about him."

Niall Gibbons agrees that the Yates exhibit and Glasnevin tour are for him personally amazing and in particular says that American's visiting with an interest in the long and storied history of Ireland should not miss out on visiting Glasnevin. He suggests taking the 90 minute tour and says for him it was like going back to school and relearning his history.

Returning to a discussion on the Wild Atlantic Way Stephanie Abrams mentions one of the attractions along the route also commissioned by the Office of Public Works, and part of the National Museum of Ireland is The Museum of Country Life in County Mayo , which is in Turlough Park near Turlough Village, on the N5 about eight kilometers east of Castlebar. This too is a free exhibit and visitors are fully immersed in what country life has been like in Ireland.

Niall also highly suggests the Skellig Experience, which is also located along the Wild Atlantic Way, and is a United Nations World Heritage Site. He says it's about 8 miles off the coast of the village of Portmagee in southwest County Kerry. He says there you'll find a remarkably preserved sixth century monastic settlement. He says it's very hard to get to since it's an island and you have to get there by boat. Each boat takes about twelve people with limited daily runs. There is also a dry land exhibit and learning centre. He says this is only one example of the great kinds of experiences to be found along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Niall Gibbons also urges people to visit Ceide Fields in Mayo which he says are the most extensive Stone Age monuments in the world consisting of field systems, dwellings and megalithic tombs. He says it extends over thousands of acres and both he and Stephanie Abrams concur that experiencing the site is amazing.

Stephanie Abrams says that Ireland is a great destination choice because of its year-round calendar of activities. She says that while many places are very seasonally or calendar based in terms of events that might interest tourists, Ireland is sure to have ongoing events that satisfy traveler's interest ranges no matter the time of year. She says that there's never a perfect time for a trip and that it comes down to having health, time, and available credit line. She urges listeners to not delay a trip to Ireland, but rather to make today the day that you plan and initiate your trip. Niall agrees and adds that you'll always get a friendly welcome, and that once you do arrive you'll start planning your next trip. Also with a 5 hour flight time from the United States' east coast and more "lift", or airline seats, available than ever before now is a great time to start arranging a visit. He says there are new flights from Chicago and Philadelphia with more flights coming into Shannon now as well.

Stephanie remembers back several years when King John's Castle was re-opened and how impressive the castle and grounds are. She talks about the sense of stepping back in time when you enter the castle and explore the bowels of the castle which is basically completely intact and dates back to the thirteenth century and is one of the most fully intact Norman castles remaining in Europe. Niall Gibbons says he was just there recently, after a huge investment was made in upgrading the visitor center with new interactive exhibitions and information resources and was hugely impressed. Stephanie says they also set up historical exhibitions in the open courtyard and put on historically themed performances. Overall it's a venue not to be missed.
