Susan Hawvermale, Director, Orange County Tourism, Goshen, Hudson Valley, New York, USA.

Discover Orange County in New York's Hudson Valley Region

Orange County is one of the 10 counties in the Hudson Valley Tourism Region. Susan Hawvermale is the Director of Orange County Tourism as well as the President of the Hudson Valley Tourism Region Association of County Directors. The Hudson Valley Region has a land mass about the same size of the state of Connecticut and follows the path of the Hudson River as it ranges from the tip of Manhattan to New York State's capitol, Albany, about 150 miles distant. The counties on either side of the river are what constitute the region. The 10 counties are Rockland, Westchester, Orange, Putnum, Ulster, Dutchess, Greene, Albany, Rensselaer, Columbia.

Travel Expert and Radio Show Host Stephanie Abrams remarks on the beauty and splendor of the Hudson Valley Region. She has driven along the path of the Hudson river in every season and is always impressed by the variety of weather, foliage and sky noting that it is never the same twice and is always gorgeous.

Susan Hawvermale agrees with Stephanie that the Hudson Valley Region feels like "Hometown America" because of all the small river villages on the coasts of the river and the interior of the region is filled with quaint and historic buildings and towns. Susan encourages visitors to plan an overnight trip or longer so they can explore more of the nooks and crannies. A day trip from Manhattan or elsewhere in NY or Massachusetts is definitely possible, but with so much to do in the region, you can easily plan a longer trip with no worry that you will run out of things to do.

Stewart Airport is a smaller airport located in the heart of the Hudson Valley Region in New Windsor, New York is a smaller region alrport and is a great way to fly into the Hudson Valley and rent a car. Its about half way between Manhattan and Albany so a great starting point for any adventure in the region. One of the advantages of flying into a smaller airport, like Stewart, is that its often easier and faster than dealing with a larger gateway such as JFK, LaGuardia or even Hartford. Susan Hawvermale describes Stewart as a doable, manageable, nice airport that still is close to major arteries (roads) and puts you right in the heart of the region, ready to get on with your exploration.

Susan Hawvermale grew up in the Hudson Valley and has lived there for much of her life. At press time she's been in her current job for 22 years. She grew up in Nyack New York which was originally part of Orange County, but broke off to become part of Rockland County in 1798. She says at heart she's an "Orange County girl".

Orange county is home to some institutions and museums that are household names in the United States and around the world. The United States Military Academy West Point, located in West Point New York is one of these and is a remarkable place to visit with awe inspiring views of the Hudson river from its grounds. Tours are offered at the Academy and Susan just recently visited and took the tour. Susan remarks that getting to West Point from nearby Stewart Airport is extremely easy and suggests visiting Woodbury Commons Premium Outlets which both Host Stephanie Abrams and Susan Hawvermale agree is a world class shopping location for discounts on major high end fashion brands. Woodbury Commons is easy to access at exit 16 on the New York State Thruway or via Route 32.

If you are looking for a smaller, quainter shopping experience Susan Hawvermale suggests Orange County's Sugarloaf Craft Village which has artists practicing there in the homes and barns of the village that date back 250 years.

Also located along Route 32 in Orange County New York is the Storm King Art Center which Susan describes as the largest sculpture park in the United States and is populated with a fantastic array of outdoor sculpture from world famous artists. Susan is almost at a loss for words in describing and wonderful and beautiful the Storm King Art Center is. She knows several people who make frequent day trips either from New York City to visit and its one of her favorite places to visit as well. The Storm King Art Center is also accessible from the New York State Thruway. Show host Stephanie Abrams remarks that for years she's driven by the park, which can be seen from the Thruway and has always wanted to visit and hopes to do so this summer.

Orange County is home to several historic manor homes including Hill-Hold built in 1769 and located in Campbell Hall, New York, Brick House in Montgomery, New York built in 1768 and Crawford House built in 1830 in Newburgh, New York overlooking the Hudson River.

The Hudson Valley Region is also home to a lot of American history and rich with Revolutionary War sites including Fort Putnam, Fort Constitution, Fort Montgomery.

The Hudson Valley region and in particular Orange County is home to many farm-to-table restaurants known for their locally sourced meals. The Culinary Institute of America finds its home in Hyde Park New York and Brotherhood Winery, the oldest Winery in the United States is located in Washingtonville, New York.

Susan Hawvermale shares some information about the Motorcyclopedia museum which is in Newburgh, New York and features hundreds of vintage motorcycles dating from 1897 through present. Newburgh in Orange County is also home to Orange County Choppers, which was featured in a TV show by the same name.
