If visiting New York's Hudson Valley region consider flying into Stewart Airport

Stewart International is located just west of Newburgh, New York. It is about 60 miles north of New York City and is easily accessible via 87 or 84 just west of the 84/87 intersection.

Stewart can be described as a smaller regional airport and because of this is going to be easier to navigate with less traffic, hassle and distance between check-in, baggage claim and gates.

Stewart has on-site car rental as well as overnight parking. Several airlines service the airport including JetBlue, US Airways and Delta.

Besides the time savings you'll find at the airport because of its smaller size, if you fly in and rent a car there, you can start your Hudson Valley adventure already in the heart of the region without first having to battle through a gargantuan airport such as JFK or Newark before then getting in a car and driving through 2 or 3 hours of traffic.

Discover New York State's Columbia County in the Hudson Valley Region.

Ann Cooper has lived in Columbia County for 59 years. Her parents moved from Chicago after visiting the region and discovering, quite by accident, the village of Kinderhook.

Columbia County is 2 hours north from New York City by Amtrak or 2.5 hours by car. It shares its eastern border with the Berkshires of Massachusetts and the Hudson River and Catskill region borders its West. To its north is Albany and the Capitol District region and Poughkeepsie is to its south.

Ann says that one of the coups for the county is that it has an Amtrak station in the city of Hudson, New York, which is the 4th busiest station in New York State. She describes the city of Hudson as a marvel with 8 blocks stuffed full of art galleries, antique shops and dining options. Some notable restaurants include Fish and Game which has a daily set menu with all fresh produce and a diner called Grazin which only offers farm-to-table food. While speaking about food it comes up that Food Network Star Nancy Fuller from the TV show Farmhouse Rules lives in the county. Part of what helps make the county such a draw for fresh quality farm produce is its rich soil thanks in large part to the Hudson River

One interesting accommodation option in the county is the Kinderhook FarmStay which allows visitors to lodge on a working farm which has a guest a cottage or smaller apartment where you can stay and optionally work the farm as part of the experience.

Travel Expert and show host Stephanie Abrams reminds us that the area offers great tourism year round and Ann suggests some historic sites in the county that should not be missed. Martin Van Burren, the 8th president of United States, was born and retired in the village of Kinderhook. His retirement farm home is a National Historic Site. Interestingly he was the first President that was born in the United States. Ann says they have a wonderful festival called Harvest Fest each year in the 3rd weekend of September. Also the Olana State Historic Site is the 19th century home and studio of the Hudson River School artist Frederic Church which is a 250 acre estate filled with art and architectural detail. Ann Cooper describes the view from the grounds as breathtaking.
