Get from NYC to Putnam in About an Hour Where You Will Great Hiking and Biking and More

In this segment, Libby Pataki, Director for Putnam County Tourism and Travel Expert Stephanie Abrams discuss Putnam County in depth starting with some background on LIbby Pataki's relationship to the state as a self described "New York Girl". Libby's Husband, George Pataki also has deep roots to New York as he was born in Peekskill, where incidentally he later became mayor, followed by a long career in New York service as a State Assemblyman, State Senator and ultimately the 53rd Governor of New York State.

Putnam County is the second smallest county in New York State after Rockland County which is also in the Hudson Valley Region. Libby says she can cross the county in under an hour by car, which is basically what she does each day as she commutes from her home in Garrison to Carmel, the County Seat, which is very close to the Connecticut state border and Danbury, Connecticut.

From Libby's perspective, one of the best things about Putnam County is how beautiful its natural features are, which she attributes to the various state protections afforded to its reservoirs which are key to New York City's water supply. She describes it as a more rural county with great hiking and biking trails, gorgeous state parks including the Hudson Highlands State Park and Clarence Fahnestock State Park as well as mountains including Mt. Taurus and lots of protected open spaces in general.

Libby says that getting to Putnam County is made very easy because of mass transit options including easy access via mass transit from New York City into the towns of Garrison, Cold Spring, Patterson, Southeast and Brewster. Putnam County's slogan is "Where the Country Begins" and you can get there from the City in about an hour via mass transit or car (depending on traffic).

Some notable summer events in Putnam County are a July 4th, 2014 weekend bash at Till Foster Farm in Brewster, New York. The farm is extremely easy to access from US Highway 84. If driving east exit 19 (exit 18 is Carmel, the County Seat) puts you at Till Foster Farm's proverbial front door. There will be live bands, carnivals, picnics and will be a great family outing. At one point the farm was up for sale and redevelopment, but it is now protected space and owned by Putnam County.

Glenwood Farm, a community supported agriculture (CSA) has opened a cidery producing hardened cider and is on the Hudson Valley region cider route. If a beer enthusiast, The Bull and Barrel Brewery and Pub just opened in Brewster.
