Young Musicians Study with the Boston Symphony Music During the Summer at the Tanglewood Music Center

Travel Expert and Radio Show Host for the "Travelers411" Radio Show, Stephanie Abrams, sits with Danielle Wiebe, Viola Fellow at this year's Tanglewood Music Center. They are at Tanglewood's Highwood House, which Stephanie describes as a historic estate-like home on the grounds of Tanglewood. She says members, donors, patrons and benefactors of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood have the privilege of making dining arrangements and coming by for something nice to drink before or after a performance and that the views overlooking the grounds of Tanglewood and Stockbridge Bowl are magnificent and tranquil. Stephanie also says that one of the things that makes Tanglewood such a vibrant, musical place is the Tanglewood Music Center. It's a summer program for gifted and talented young people interested in instrumental music, composing and conducting, Daniel explains. It's an opportunity to improve their art and interface with wonderful musicians who give master classes.

Danielle Wiebe Danielle has lived in London, Ontario and now lives in Alberta, Canada. She plays the viola and is a student at New England Conservatory, in Boston, where she says she just finished her Bachelors Degree". She says that because the BSO is also in Boston it makes it easy to go to concerts and that when she hears about summer programs like the Tanglewood Music Center, it's hard not to try and attend. She says, in speaking of the others in this year's summer program, that "they're all amazing musicians and it's really an honor to sit next to people who you can learn anything from them, every day. It's like watching the next great people sitting next to you every day."

Danielle says attending the Tanglewood Music Center summer classes is also an opportunity to interface with the Boston Symphony. She says, that for instance, tonight (date of audio recording) is "Tanglewood on Parade" and for the 1812 Overture as the finale. She says the students get to sit next to the BSO members and play, and she says of the experience of sitting next to the Boston Symphony Orchestra "you don't want to take your eyes off their fingers, it's amazing." Of course she is playing too, but for her it's a profound experience to sit next to her mentors and idols.

Danielle Wiebe has received recognition for her own skill including winning several awards. She says she recently took 3rd Place in the Sphinx competition which is specifically for ethnic minorities. She says she is of mixed Mexican and Canadian ethnicity. She says it was an honor being at the Sphinx Awards because she could play with the Sphinx Orchestra made up of past winners and competitors. She says she doesn't take anything for granted. She has also won awards at the Music Academy of the West Concerto Competition.

Danielle says she originally started on the violin, but she says the violin is very difficult in part because so many other music students are interested in it. She says she liked the sound of the viola and it came without competing with so many other violinists since, growing up, everyone wanted to play the violin and no one wanted to play the viola. Danielle says that this is her second year of coming to the Tanglewood Music Center summer program and that having so many concerts during the term is definitely what got her to come back. For instance, she says, on July 16 they played with Assistant Conductor to the BSO, Marcelo Lehninger. They played the musical piece "Also Sprach Zarathustra" by Strauss which was popularized as the opening theme to the Stanley Kubrick film "2001: A Space Odyssey". She says it was one of the most incredible performances she every participated it. "Everyone was so in touch with the piece and what they were doing and feeling a real connection with the audience".

Danielle says "it's hard to talk about, express, magic to someone who hasn't felt it before". She hopes to play in an orchestra some day, maybe even the BSO. With the BSO, for instance there's a reason the lawn fills up, as well as the shed with 5000 people. Danielle's message for young, aspiring musicians, is to "keep at it". She says some might think "wow there's so many good people, I'll never get there" but urges them to "work hard, keep doing it if you like to do it, it's closer than you think".
