Get into the Christmas and Holiday Season Spirit With the Holiday Pops

Radio Show Host and Travel Expert Stephanie Abrams says that around this season there is no lack of holiday music on the radio, and that much of the best of it are from Boston Pops recording sessions. She says that listening to the Boston Pops perform at Christmas time at Boston's Symphony Hall sends chills up your spine and down your arms. She's been to the Holiday Pops twice and loves it. Dennis Alves, Director of Artistic Planning for the Boston Pops agrees that the Holiday Pops are a great experience and the hottest ticket in town, "even hotter than Nutcracker", he says!

Dennis Alves says that people want to come every year [to the Holiday Pops] as a family tradition. He notes that during the recent economic downturn the Holiday Pops ticket sales have stayed very strong while other venues suffered. The Holiday Pops have been ongoing as a Christmas Season event since the mid 1970's and that now new generations are coming thanks to grandparents bringing their children and grand children.

There are 38 Holiday Pops concerts scheduled between Dec. 5 through Christmas eve, December 24, 2012 season. Dennis says that the musical selection includes a variety of sacred and secular music, even with some Chanukah music included in the lineup. He describes it as "fun for all" with 19 performance days. The Boston Symphony starts up its performance calendar right after the new year. Dennis says "there's always music at symphony hall".

Dennis says he works closely with Keith Lockhart to develop all aspects of programming and that together they decide on what songs to perform throughout the season including tours and CD/Album production.

Stephanie says that she always takes a Pops disk with her when she's traveling and doesn't go anywhere without her Holiday Pops disks. Dennis mentions that he recently read that the most popular Christmas song each year is "White Christmas" and the second is the Arthur Fiedler's recording of "Sleigh Ride". Arthur Fiedler was the first Holiday Pops conductor.

Dennis finishes this segment by telling us a little bit about the Boston Pops history. He says they were first established in 1885 by Henry Lee Higgonson who also started the Boston Symphony in 1881. When he built Symphony Hall his idea was that after the Symphony season ended there should be summer concerts of lighter kinds of music. He spent a lot of time in Vienna in the beer gardens and loved the idea of people sitting around listening to music. So today, Dennis says, the Boston Pops perform in a cabaret style venue with listeners sitting at tables. Food and drink are available with table service so he says it's a much different concert experience then attending the Symphony; It's a much more relaxed experience; come with family and friends it's a great way to get into the holiday spirit.

One interesting thing about the Symphony Hall venue is that while the symphony uses traditional hall style theatre seating, those seats used for the Symphony roll out on tracks, and a different floor is rolled in with cocktail tables and a dance floor for the Boston Pops performances. Dennis says you can find a time lapsed film showing the changeover on bso.org.
