Castle Donegal, Donegal Centre, County Donegal, Ireland. After the situation for the Earls in Ireland was made impossible by the British, over 100 Earls left Donegal in what is referred to as the Fleeing of the Earls in 1607. The Earls departed Donegal and headed for Spain to find a place where acceptance of Catholics made for a better place to live in peace. It is ironic that the Jamestown, Virginia colony was being established for religious tolerance at the same time. Travel Expert Stephanie Abrams muses that the Irish might have made an earlier impact on the developments in America if the Earls had headed West instead of South! 2007 is the 400th anniversary of both the Fleeing of the Earls and the founding of Jamestown, VA.
