Image Title:  Sting Ray City, Cayman Islands

Image Caption:  There are two areas referred to as Sting Ray City. At one, the water is 12 feet deep and those who enjoy scuba diving will choose to swim with the sting rays there. for the rest of us, there's a sand bar where the water is 3 to 4 feet deep. This was an area where fisherman of yore would come to clean the catch of the day to leave the debris behind. The sting rays got accustomed to coming by to eat the remains of the fishermen's catch for their own dinner. The rays were friendly enough and, over time, the fisherman played a role in making the rays people-friendly and accepting of human touch.

About 30 to 40 years ago, a clever entrepreneur realized the tourist value in introducing these friendly creatures to visitors to the Cayman Islands. Today, this is a major tourist attraction. Red Sail Sports provides tourists with and opportunity to spend time playing with the sting rays, many of which are more than 4 feet across. Squid and instruction on how to feed the squid to the sting rays are provided to the human visitors who you see in enjoying the experience. Note that "children of all ages" are enjoying this novel experience.cayman_island_stingray_city_cruise_040.jpg
