The Ritz-Carlton is a well-respected brand with many properties available in the Caribbean. The Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas is a small property for the brand with only 180 guestrooms on site. The hotel was not originally designed under the brand but has been under its management for the last 14 years. The hotel possesses a strong sense of character and a strong sense of the Caribbean destination.

The hotel consists of a series of small three-floor buildings wrapping around the bay. The trade winds give a wonderful breeze on the property. It is located on the east side of the US Virgin Islands adjacent to Red Hook Beach and facing St. John. The hotel provides shuttles to take guests to St. John (a 20 minute trip) which is over 70% national park.

Hour 2

Topics Include:

The National Hurricane Center is located on the campus of Florida International University in Miami, Florida. The center is responsible for the issuance of storm warnings for the entire Atlantic Basin as well as the eastern Pacific Ocean during hurricane season. The season begins May 15th for the Atlantic Basin and June 1st for the eastern Pacific Ocean. The season ends for both areas on November 30.

The hurricane specialist center operates 24/7 with experts consistently on duty. The tropical analyst forecast branch monitors every disturbance. Analysts apply the Dvorak technique, a system that uses satellites to estimate the intensity of tropical cyclones. The number that is assigned to the weather pattern determines if it is serious enough to be dealt with by the hurricane specialist unit. Satellite imagery, hurricane hunter aircrafts (needed to know what’s going on inside the storm), and land based radar all help specialists understand and monitor a storm’s development.

InsureMyTrip.com has experienced agents who work specifically with travel insurers and who are able find policies that meet the needs of the traveler. The company acts as a clearing house for 24 insurance providers. Agents advise people to consider all parts of their travel. It is also important that a customer make arrangements for insurance as soon as possible after they have booked a trip. Many insurance providers do cover pre-existing medical conditions but it is necessary that the customer has booked well in advance to be eligible. In the interim between booking a trip and purchasing insurance, developments could take that will have a negative impact on your ability to get coverage.

Hurricane season is a big time for travel insurers, especially during the first quarter when people are making plans for the season. Natural disasters are covered from multiple angles. Trip cancellation policies provide provisions for trip interruption costs plus an additional 50% of that cost. For whatever reason, a traveler may find that they need to fly home. The cost of your trip is covered plus additional travel expenses. The customers will be reimbursed for the unused portion of the trip and the cost to get home. To be eligible for the “cancel for any reason” policy a customer’s reasons for cancellation must be paralleled by what’s in the contract (fear of arrival is excluded).

In unstable economic times it is beneficial to have an additional stream of revenue. The travel industry is consistently thriving and is able to provide opportunities to those who have the desire to become an outside agent and work from home. Cruisebrothers.com works with top cruise lines and enlists outside agents to help generate sales. Commissions can help supplement another income and give travel opportunities to the participating agent. Outside agents allow Cruisebrothers.com to limit their full-time staff. Interested parties should visit Cruisingfree.com.

Home based business opportunities give people the opportunity to travel the world. Outside agents help others book their travel reservations and earn 50 percent of the commission on each sale they make online. High volume producers will earn a higher commission.  The more you book the more you make. Often people start with friends and family members and develop their abilities as an agent. Some people are so successful that they are able to make the experience a full-time occupation. Agents also receive travel perks such as free cruises on the inaugural passages of major cruises lines. To become an agent go to www.cruisingfree.com  or call Steve Gelfuso direct at 800-827-7779 EXT 4721.

Hour 3

Topics Include:

Stephanie visited Acapulco, Mexico in April for a major tourism event. She had a stunning view from the balcony of her hotel and a wonderful overall trip despite an earthquake and the early reports of Swine Flu. She says that the location of her hotel was easily accessible. The drive from Acapulco Airport to the popular Diamond Zone section (where her hotel was) was only 30 minutes.

A recent Acapulco drug bust has been widely reported in the media with many newscasters claiming that American tourists have fled in fear. Stephanie states that these incidents took place far away from the tourism centers in the city. She stresses that it is false reporting to state that no Americans are currently staying in Acapulco and hopes that it won’t deter any future tourists from visiting.

Brian Hodge, Marketing Coordinator of Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau joins “Travel with Stephanie Abrams!” to discuss the Providence/Warwick Rhode Island area. The cities provide much local culture in a small manageable package. There is an airport located in Warwick which is 30 minutes from Newport (famous for its impressive mansions). There is a lot to do and see in Providence alone including the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, the John Brown House Museum (one of the oldest mansions in the country) Dunkin’ Donuts Center (a sports and concert arena) and the Providence Performing Arts Center.

Warwick, Rhode Island prides itself on being the birth place of American independence. The city is celebrating the 44th annual Gaspee Day this month. The HBMS Gaspee was a British revenue schooner sent by George the 3rd in 1772 to patrol the New England costal waters. The Gaspee ended up being one of he most hated vessels in the British Navy. Crew members stole goods from the locals and made a general nuisance of themselves.

Warwick is a collection of small historically important villages connected by 39 miles of coastline. Brand new developments in the city include the NYLO Providence Warwick Hotel. Another claim to fame of the city is the Aldrich Mansion which was the setting for the party scene in the film “Meet Joe Black”. It is currently owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese but tours are still available to visitors. On the beautiful, adjacent coastline is a refurbished tea house also open to the public.

NYLO Providence Warwick
The NYLO Providence Warwick Hotel

The NYLO Providence Warwick Hotel is a contemporary, chic property with flare, charm, whimsy and functionality. It is Zen and uncluttered without being antiseptic or overly minimalist in style. Stephanie arrived at the hotel late in the evening and was enchanted by the candle-lit lobby. She was also struck by the building’s amazing design features.

The property has 163 guestrooms on five floors. Stephanie says that her room may have had the nicest bed she has ever slept in. Another popular amenity is the hotel’s deck which overlooks Pawtucket River. It is a great place to sit outside and have a cocktail or watch an outdoor event.

Fun Facts:

On June 19, 1772 the Hannah (a packet boat) failed to lower its flag to the Gaspee in honor of its presence. The Gaspee set chase and eventually ran a ground. The Hannah continued on to Warwick and 64 courageous men ran out to the Gaspee and took the commander prisoner. He was shot and killed. This marked the first British bloodshed of the American Revolution. American patriots burnt the ship. The celebration of defiance encouraged discussion among the colonies which led to the convening of the Continental Congress and eventually the drafting of the Declaration of Independence.
