John Williams, President of New York Guest, a firm specializing in contract concierge services, joins “Traveling Feet!” alongside Paul Fitzpatrick, proprietor of the Morgan Hotel in Dublin. John recently stayed at the Morgan and was impressed by its phenomenal service, something he knows about firsthand as president of a concierge group. The Morgan is unorthodox but comfortable, boutique but on the larger side and is incredibly bright and warm. Stephanie calls it “whimsical” and “creatively inspiring”. The hotel has 121 bedrooms including one-bedroom suites. John stayed in a one-bedroom suite with a kitchen and outdoor patio.

Paul Fitzpatrick explains that the Morgan is intended for people who want to stay in the kind of hotel that differs from the norm. The Morgan is conveniently based in Dublin and is great for walking to nearby attractions such as Stephen's Green on Grafton Street, Trinity College (home to the Book of Kells), the River Liffey and all the other major happenings of the Temple Bar section of the city.

Albany was recently named one of the top ten 10 All-American Cities by the National Civic League. The honor is awarded to a city that deals with civic engagement, inclusiveness and programs important to the citizen population. Nine other cities, both large and small, across the country were also named. Each one had programs able to demonstrate commitment to the growth of its young people, community services and economic development.

The honor fits perfectly into the city's quadricentennial year. In remembrance of Henry Hudson's discovery of the Hudson River the city provides teaching ships such as the famous historical replica, the Half Moon Ship. The boat is scheduled to travel up and down the valley throughout the summer. Teaching ships take groups of children out for as long as a week at a time and combines education with a fun community activity.

Fun Facts:

Stephanie is currently writing a travel guide book that emphasizes pairing your daily activities and experiences with specific accommodations.

Irish coffee was invented in Foynes, County Limerick, Ireland in the 1930s at the site of the old Shannon Airport. American passengers disembarked a Pan Am flight in particularly terrible weather. The airbase terminal chef, Joseph Sheridan, chose to add whiskey to the coffees given out to the chilled passengers. One person asked if they were being served Brazilian coffee to which Sheridan replied that it was Irish coffee. The story reached a journalist of the New York Times and alcohol history was made.

Hour 2

Topics Include:

The "g" Hotel Galway Ireland
The "g" Hotel, Galway, Ireland

The g is a contemporary boutique property in the heart of Galway City and is one of Ireland's foremost spa hotels. The hotel was designed by Philip Treacy, a London milliner (seller of hats) and famous hat designer. The hotel has 101 guest rooms, an “Espa” spa and an on site restaurant called the Matz at the G, headed by Executive Chef Stephen Matz.
Damien O'Riordan, General Manager of the ‘g', explains that Galway is a “more personalized city” that maintains a small town feel despite its numerous attractions. An upcoming festival is the Galway Races. The races' summer festival is held Monday, July 27, 2009 through Sunday, August 2, 2009. During race week the “g” will hold two competitions. There will be a “best dressed” contest on the Wednesday night of race week and a “best hat” contest on Thursday night. The winner will win a Phillip Treacy hat. Each piece he designs is unique and not duplicated.

The public area (including spa, lounge area and restaurant) of the hotels covers over 18,000 square feet. Philip Treacy designed all parts of the hotel and worked alongside close designer friends. The ornamental elements of the hotel are striking. The concierge desk is sculpted in the shape of the crest of a wave. The lounge areas include the atrium lounge, the gentleman's lounge and the ladies lounge. The ladies lounge has a color scheme of vibrant pink and purple. It has a hand-woven carpets and an Andy Warhol print on its walls.

The gentleman's lounge is said to be “where old world meets new world”. It has 19th century Italian mirrors, and chairs shaped like sea shells with vibrant ocean blue cushions. The “g” was recently nominated by Conde Nast as one of the top three hotels in the world for ambience and design and its suites were featured in the fall 2008 edition of Elite Magazine. Room rates start at $180 USD.

Stephanie recently received an uplifting answering machine message from Dennis Quinn, Senior Vice President of International Sales, NBC Universal Orlando. He called to say thank you from Ireland. Quinn took her advice and extended his business trip in Dublin in order to explore more of the country. It is the land of his heritage and he was surprised by the immense connections he has felt.

Dennis Quinn joins “Traveling Feet” via his cell phone from Doolin near the Cliffs of Moher. Stephanie gives him some whirlwind advice about what to see and do in his final days in Ireland. She recommends the Ballyvara Guest House for accommodations in the Doolin area. She advises Quinn to view the recently reopened Brian's Tower at the cliffs (the original visitor center) and the crossroads in Liscannor where there is a large grouping of road signs. She also suggests he ride Doolin Ferries to see the cliffs from below and to visit Inisheer, the smallest and most eastern of the Aran Islands. Stephanie took a tour of the island on a horse drawn cart and was amazed at how the town seemed to have changed very little over the past few hundred years. She also recommends visiting Athlone (Ireland's bull's eye) and a hotel just outside the city, the Glasson Hotel and Golf Club.

Glasson Hotel & Golf Club in Glasson, Athlone, Ireland recently joined the Distinguished Hotels collection. The hotel embodies the unique sensibilities that the CEO of Distinguished Hotels Bill Burruss looks for in properties he considers for the group. Athlone is literally the center of the country and Glasson Hotel is accessible from all directions. It is a great place for a visitor to base himself. The hotel is also in the middle of the great Shannon Waterway so many guests arrive by cruise.

One of the hotel's foremost attractions is its golf course designed by Christy O'Connor Junior. As president of the club and co-owner of the hotel, Tom Reid is holding a special Presidents Day golfing competition on Sunday, July 26, 2009. All members are invited to play on this top-quality course. The course is used by European Tour golfers and for the annual Challenge Tour event.

Fun Facts:

Philip Treacy designed the hat worn by Camilla Parker Bowles during her wedding to Prince Charles and the hat worn by Sarah Jessica Parker for the movie premiere of “Sex and the City”.

The origin of the phrase “mad as a hatter” is unknown. A popular theory is that hat designers in the 18th and 19th century suffered mercury poisoning due to the use of the chemical element in the manufacturing of felt. Absorption of mercury through the skin has been connected to the development of brain disorders.

Gaeilge is a spoken on all three of the Aran Islands.
