Hour 1

Topics Include:

Companies are more frequently canceling employee travel because it looks politically incorrect to be spending money on trips during an economically insecure time. There was an article in USA Today “Posh Trips for Jobs Well-Done are Fading Away”. Though travel is a motivator and a great way to compensate hardworking employees, incentive trips have been labeled as “junkets” by Congress. Even companies who received no government funding are coming under attack. The end result is hurting the travel and hospitality industry and doing a disservice to business employees.

While the technology of web and video conferencing has greatly improved in recent years it is still inferior to face to face meetings. Companies aren't equipped to host large conventions at their own headquarters. Furthermore, it makes sense to find a location that is equidistant for companies to meet at. The cost of even the most elaborate trips is paid for by a small percentage of the revenue earned by the hard work of the employees. Incentive travel remains important as a moral booster and in the end it is profitable to the companies that provide it as well as to the travel sector.

Fun Facts

One out of every nine people in the world is employed in travel.

Massachusetts' Berkshire County is home to fantastic concert venues and art museums. The Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, MA was recently fully renovated. Part of the $20 million investment included restoring a 100 year old concert piano. The piano's inaugural performance was played by composer Marvin Hamlisch. Hamilsch's film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards but he has consistently lost to famed composer and conductor, John Williams. Williams will conduct the Boston Pops this summer at Tanglewood, their summer home. Film night at Tanglewood is July 18th, 2009.

St. Augustine of Hippo stated that “the world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page”. This remains incredibly true today. Stephanie's air fare with Continental from Newark to Shannon cost under $700 USD for two people one way. Travel is not only affordable but necessary.

Stephanie relays a sad piece of news she received. Andrea Knott, a listener of “Travel with Stephanie Abrams” on KCEO AM 1000 in San Diego, CA and Prize Winner of a trip to a series of chateaus in France, recently passed away due to a heart condition. Stephanie is now arranging the trip for Andrea's mother.
