Hour 1

Topics Include:

Reinsford Hendy, County Councilor for Kildare, Ireland joins “Traveling Feet” at the Clare Tourism Conference in County Clare. Kildare has been a sister city of Lexington, Kentucky for about 15 years. The two cities have an educational exchange program for young people as well as a shared pastime of horse racing. Both Kildare and Lexington are thoroughbred counties. Kildare is famed for being the Irish horse county. One of the biggest horse races on the Irish calendar, the Irish Derby Festival, is held at the prestigious Curragh Racecourse in Kildare. Kildare is also renowned for world-class golf and is home to the Irish National Stud farm.

Visitors of the county have the option of a unique hotel experience at the Kilkea Castle. Built in 1180 by Hugh de Lacy, Kilkea Castle has been home to some legendary figures, including Silken Thomas and Gerald Fitzgerald. It is the oldest inhabited castle in Ireland but is refurbished to provide guests the luxury of modern comforts.

Most places do not have a sister city in another part of the world and miss out on the advantages. It is a wonderful way to stimulate economic growth and have people establish personal connections elsewhere. It advances education, cultural information and experience and is significant for people of all ages.

Haroulan Dourdouvela, representative of Schimatari Greece, joins “Traveling Feet” to discuss Schimatari's sister city relationship with Ennistymon in County Clare.
The mayor of Schimatari met with former Clare mayor, Flan Garvey, at a conference on twinning in Crete. Twinning has many benefits. It promotes peace and is an excellent way to fight stereotypes.

Stephanie quotes Mark Twain:

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” “Innocents Abroad” by Mark Twain.

Lanesborough, Massachusetts is twinned with Lanesborough, Ireland. They share a common history as each derives its name from the Lane family in Ireland. Stephanie Abrams will meet with a group from Lanesborough, Ireland on December 28, 2008 at the Glasson Hotel and Golf Resort in Westmeath County. In March 2009, Stephanie and “Treasure of Ireland” trip members will march in Lanesborough, Ireland's parade.

Hour 2

Topics Include:

Kingdom of Lesotho's Ambassador to Ireland, Mannete Ramaili, joins “Traveling Feet” to discuss her country and the benefits of having a sister city. Lesotho is landlocked and entirely surrounded by the Republic of South Africa. It is a twelve hour flight from Europe to Johannesburg, South Africa and another hour to Lesotho by plane. The country is thirty thousand square kilometers and is the highest country in the world at 1000 meters above sea level on average and 3000 meters above sea level at is highest point.

Lesotho is free of malaria and has 300 days of sunshine a year. The country has beautiful rocky beaches and a 204 meter high waterfall, Maletsunyane Falls. There are additional waterfalls that you can swim in. Lesotho also hosts the only ski resort in all of South Africa. The founder of Lesotho was Moshoeshoe I, a peaceful diplomat who sought independence for his country. Lesotho became a constitutional monarchy but was pushed into the mountains. Today this proves to be an advantage. They have recently discovered four of the largest diamonds in the world, have a large dam and are investing in renewable energies.

Stephanie shares her only Italian with guest Giovanni Segato, “I want to eat something.”
Segato joins “Traveling Feet” on behalf of the twinning committee between Ennistymon, Ireland and Pozzoleone, Italy. Pozzoleone is 70 km north of Venice and is halfway between Venice and the Lake of Garda. It is very near to the sea and the mountains but is on a flat countryside. It is well connected to larger towns but is still a relatively small community.

There is the risk in a small town of the people thinking the whole world is within the boundaries of where they live. Twinning with a foreign city helps to avoid this. The mayor of Pozzoleone started visiting international cities in 1999. He met Flan Garvey in a meeting of mayors in Spain. At the time he did not speak a word of English and had someone at the conference translate. In 2001 an official ceremony was held in Ireland. The two cities plan to have their national football teams meet before competing against one another next April. One of the greatest advantages of twinning is having schools get together. Young people become more naturally accustomed to different people.
