In the hotel business, all responsibilities, all
expectations, all operations are the total responsibility of the
hotel’s general manager, familiarly referred to as the GM.
If you want something taken care of, ask for the GM.
GM’s are amazing people! To be a hotel GM,
the requirements are simple: one has to be able to spin 100 dinner
plates on 100 sticks and keep them all safely in the air while
smiling, telling jokes, complimenting people who pass by and always
appearing to be gliding along. Elegance, charm, warmth, and fabulous
listening and organizational skills are the hallmark of the GM.
Unflappable in the face of disaster, able to handle multiple crises
at the same time, capable of doing the difficult at once and the
impossible given a bit of time are all characteristics of a hotel
GM. And no one knows a hotel better than its GM, not even the
hotel’s owners.
From years of interviewing GM’s all over
the world, I have developed an ever-growing respect for the quality
of care and concern, the time and patience, and the lengths to
which GM’s go to exceed the expectations of their guests.
I suspect there is a good book in the many stories and anecdotes
I have accumulated from these interviews which have aired on my
nationally syndicated radio shows, Travel WITH Stephanie Abrams
and Traveling Feet. And when I write this book, I have no doubt
that Chapter One will be entitled: Boston Hotelier Survives Perfect
Storm with Style!”
The Boston lodging is the Hotel Commonwealth located
at 325 Commonwealth Avenue, a chic and trendy hotel with a uniquely
relaxed elegance and an eclectic feel that matches the wide range
of guest backgrounds that it serves. The place is known for anticipating
guests’ needs, paying attention to minute details, providing
the best of bedding, linens, and every amenity for that perfect
escape into comfort, and has a reputation for exceeding guests’
expectations, wishes and demands. In short, it’s one of
my favorite places to stay. And if you enjoy getting some work
done when you’re traveling, you will fall in love with their
oversized desks that come complete with cubbies and storage spots
for your paperwork, a huge writing area and electric outlets at
desk level so you don’t have to grovel on the floor to plug
in your laptop!
