Newport, RI: Boston is clearly
a great jumping off point for visiting its environs. Be sure to
make time to visit Newport! It’s an easy trip into history
where you’ll find bicycles for rent to add a unique dimension
to your sightseeing pleasure! Buy a combination admissions ticket
to maximize the economy of visiting the mansions on Bellevue Avenue,
once used only in July and August by the Vanderbilt’s and
other wealthy families for their summer entertaining. You’ll
find the fresh sea breezes refreshing as you shop on the waterfront
at the boutique stores and enjoy walks along the waterfront. And
you can count on great seafood in nautically themed restaurants
to complete this picture. Check out The Viking Hotel, another
member of Historic Hotels of America and, for dinner, try the
White Horse Tavern, founded in 1673, where you’ll enjoy
dinner by candlelight beside a wood burning fireplace in this
cozy and romantic historic restaurant and inn.
The West and North West of Ireland:
Boston’s new service from Logan Airport to Ireland West
Knock, the international airport located on Ireland’s west
coast between Galway and Donegal, on the Scottish low-cost airline,
Globespan, makes a “side trip” to Ireland a hop and
a jump! Just be sure to have your valid passport with you! It’s
barely a 5 hour flight! You can be golfing in Ireland faster than
you can get to California! Arrange for a car to be waiting for
you at Ireland West Knock with Dooley Car Rental, the only independent
car rental company in Ireland. You can reserve online at www.dooleycarrental.com
or call their US office at (800) 331-9301. While this is an international
airport equipped for landing the most modern jets, you’ll
find this traveler-friendly airport small, convenient, uncrowded
and perfectly located for exploring Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Donegal,
Sligo, Cavan, Monaghan, and Leitrim and being the jumping off
point for the rest of your explorations in Ireland. And within
10 miles of Ireland West Knock Airport, you’ll find the
Knock Shrine, the second most important Shrine after Lourdes,
France. The Shrine at Knock and the exhibits associated with it
are worth the visit and will get your visit to Ireland off to
a great start almost the moment you’ve landed at Ireland
West Knock! When you head to Donegal, be sure to visit Donegal
Castle and consider the Sandhouse Hotel located on a gorgeous
stretch of sandy white beach on the Atlantic Ocean just minutes
away in the little town of Rossnawlagh. Consider taking surfing
lessons, beginners welcomed, at the Fin McCool Surf School, owned
and operated by Neal Britton and his family of Irish Surfing Champions.
And when you head south of Ireland West Knock Airport, stop in
Galway for your shopping and sightseeing. Just 2 miles away, in
Bushy Park, you’ll find Glenlo Abbey, an historic abbey
converted into a welcoming hotel under the care and management
of the Bourke family who will embrace you with a warm Irish welcome
and make you feel part of the family. You can golf right there
on the property, dine in their classically beautiful dining room,
enjoy a gourmet dinner in the retired Orient Express or Royal
Mail train cars permanently stationed behind Glenlo Abbey, www.glenlo.com,
for a unique gourmet dining experience. The film, “Murder
on the Orient Express” was filmed in one of the cars and
Winston Churchill’s remains were carried to Blenheim Castle
for burial in another car. If you can’t stay there overnight,
be sure to stop in for a meal or a drink to soak up the atmosphere!
Be sure you take a drive to Kylemore Abbey to keep in the spirit
of your abbey experience. Take an evening flight from Boston,
nap on the plane, and you’ll be landing as the sun is rising!
With the convenience of being in the north western part of Ireland,
you can afford to hop a flight for a long weekend when you’re
in Boston on business and truly feel part of the jet set without
breaking the piggy bank!
