Now that you’ve arrived in the remarkable
city of Boston and you’ve experienced everything
from walking the Freedom Trail, whale watching on a boat cruise
at the New England Aquarium, taking the amazing Boston Chocolate
Tour with Old Town Trolley, and attending a Boston Symphony Orchestra
or Boston Pops concert at historic Symphony Hall, maybe you’re
ready to widen your horizons around Boston and visit some of my
favorite places outside of this fabulous city! Here are the Stephanie
Abrams 10 Top Picks for making your trip to Greater Boston even
greater!
Salem, MA: This immaculately manicured
town boasts some of the finest architecture in the Commonwealth
of Massachusetts and the Nation! You’ll find a museum that
dramatizes the troubling times of the Salem witch trials along
with charming streets filled with unusual boutique shops leading
to the waterfront. Great seafood restaurants abound and the Hawthorne
Hotel offers travelers a chance to step into gentler times at
this member of Historic Hotels of America property. This area
has always appealed to artisans resulting in an abundance of shops
and galleries offering the works of local artists. Put the Peabody
Essex Museum on your Must Visit list as well where you'll find
over 2 million works of art and cultural artifacts in 24 buildings!
Gloucester and Rockport, MA: Two
seaside towns with very different ambiance! Come to Gloucester
prepared to relax and enjoy the sea air as you walk through the
boutique shopping area. Adding to the curiosity-factors of this
town are that Gloucester was the focus for the film, “Perfect
Storm,” and is the home of the Gorton Fisherman! Gloucester
played a key role in the Underground Railway that helped move
slaves, prior to the Civil War, from the South to the North. You’ll
find hidden tunnels behind the fireplaces in the town. Try the
White Rainbow Restaurant on Main Street which is listed on the
National Registry of Historic Places. The food there is excellent!
Sail on the Thomas E. Lannon Schooner from Gloucester for a morning
or afternoon cruise around Boston Harbor. You’ll even get
to hoist the sails if you have the muscles for it! Then visit
Rockport, just up the road and enjoy this charming town which
has its own unique charm. Tired? Try the Emerson Inn By the Sea
in Rockport, another Historic Hotel of America. Have a drink in
on a rocking chair, enjoy afternoon tea or dinner or stay overnight!
Aim for an oceanfront room. The view from your window is worth
the trip!
